Music is an essential part of Capoeira tradition. Combining singing with percussion, Capoeira music provides energy and rhythm to the game. Tales are told through songs sung in Portuguese, which convey Brasilian history and the history of Capoeira.

The berimbau : a one string instrument with the shape of a bow, is the main instrument of Capoeira. It is played by the most senior person present at the Roda (the circle in which Capoeira takes place). All the other instruments are complimentary to the berimbau. The tempo is set by the master berimbau and the person who holds it will also lead the singing.

Berimbau lessons for beginners:
5 week course. 12noon - 1.15pm £75

Beginners will learn how to set, to hold and to play the berimbau. This course will cover the basic rhythms Angola, São Bento Pequeno, São Bento Grande. The student will be taught and will practice how to play the berimbau whilst singing Capoeira songs and interacting with the Roda. These lessons are open to all.
Own berimbau is required.

Berimbau and music lessons for intermediate students:
12noon - 1.30pm - £15 per lesson. These lessons are booked as a single lessons, please visit the LSC shop for future dates.
Intermediate students will practice the rhythms Angola, São Bento Pequeno, São Bento Grande, Samba de Roda, Cavalaria and Iúna. Student will practice playing the berimbau whilst singing Capoeira songs and interacting with the Roda. These lessons are open to students with some basic experience in playing the Berimbau, pandeiro, atabaque, agogo and reco reco.
Own berimbau is required.
