The game of Capoeira is always played between two people. You cannot play Capoeira by yourself. As a game, Capoeira can be very complex and deceiving with no right or wrong, and with no written rules unless played in an official competition. It is an old tradition that the knowledge and rules of Capoeira are passed from Master to students during years of training.
The game is played in front of musical instruments in a limited are defined by a circle and called the Roda. The Roda is only complete when the instruments, the singing, the chorus and the games take place.
In the game of Capoeira there are no winners, unless set in an official
competition. However the best player will demonstrate her or his superior abilities through tripping or 'sweeping' their camarada (partner to the floor, teasing or simply showing an understanding and respect for the new and less experienced Capoeirista.
A well-played game with skill, rhythm and knowledge is often very exciting for the players and those watching. Capoeiristas practice the movements individually and in pairs, aiming to improve their physical ability and understanding of the game. By developing their games, they will increase their chances of outwitting their future game partner or opponent. |
