The history of slavery and its lasting effects on the countries involved is complicated and difficult to define. You can find different views on the subject some of which remain highly controversial.
The story of slavery tells us about the historical forces, movements and events that have shaped our world. It also demonstrates the power of the human spirit.
It tells us how an oppressed people regained their human rights, and shows us how people can create good out of bad, and organize against injustice in spite of all the odds.
It shows us how different, co-existing cultures permanently influence and shape each other.
This idea is relevant to all of us, living in a multi-cultural area like Islington, and is central to the work of the LSC for Black History Month.
However cruelty and suffering are central to this story - this fact is unavoidable and should not be forgotten. |
